Honoring 100 Years of Al-Mussawar magazine

The Faculty of Mass Communication at Cairo University will embrace tomorrow, February 9, 2025, a celebration marking the 100th anniversary of establishing the prestigious Al-Mussawar magazine, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Souraya Al-Badaoui, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication. The celebration will encompass various events, including the opening of the Al-Mussawar exhibition, taking us on a journey through the past 100 years, and the Student Creations exhibition to showcase Egyptian stories and tales.

After that, the inaugural session of the celebration to honor some of the journalistic leaders of Al-Mussawar magazine will begin, presented by Dr. Mohamed Mansour Hiba. Moreover, the celebration will include several leading figures in the field of journalism, including Prof. Dr. Souraya Al-Badaoui, Dean of the Faculty, Mr. Omar Sami, Chairman of Dar Al-Hilal's Board of Directors, Mr. Abdul-Latif Hamed, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Mussawar magazine, Prof. Dr. Leila Abdel-Majeed, supervisor of the event's organization, Prof. Dr. Sherif Darwish, Head of the Journalism Department, and Mr. Helmy El-Namnam, former Minister of Culture.


In addition to the presence of two-panel discussions, Prof. Dr. Leila Abdel-Majeed, a journalism professor and former faculty dean, will head the first one, while Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hossam El-Din, a journalism professor, will preside over the second one, among the speakers are Mr. Hamdi Rizk, former Editor-in-Chief of Al-Mussawar Magazine, Prof. Dr. Eman Amer, Professor of History at Cairo University, Mr. Ahmed Ayoub, former Editor-in-Chief of Al-Mussawar Magazine, and Mr. Ghali Mohamed, Chairman of Dar Al-Hilal's Board of Directors and Editor-in-Chief of Al-Mussawar Magazine, along with other pioneers in journalism field.

Regarding this exceptional occasion, Al-Mussawar magazine issued a massive commemorative issue this week to mark the 100th anniversary of its first issue. This issue consists of 480 pages that narrate the story of Egypt over 100 years and includes a collection of distinguished documents and photos that provide a comprehensive glimpse into the political, social, and intellectual life in the country. The issue also includes a special gift for readers, which is a copy of the magazine's first issue published on October 24, 1924.

Al-Mussawar magazine is considered one of the oldest magazines published by Dar Al-Hilal, with its first issue released on October 24, 1924. It was founded by Emil and Shukri Zidan. The magazine documented a series of events in Egypt and the Arab world through words and images, which earned it great popularity among readers. Several pioneers of media in Egypt have served as its editors-in-chief, including Emil and Shukri Zidan, Fikri Abaza, Ali Amin, Ahmed Bahaa El-Din, Saleh Jawdat, Amina Al-Saeed, and Makram Mohamed Ahmed.
