Can You Read Hieroglyphs? You Will Step by Step

Bibliotheca Alexandrina from outside

What if i told you that you could read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs all in Arabic material, from the comfort of your screen, and without a teacher?

You’d probably think it’s complicated, right?

That it’s only for scholars or Egyptologists?

Well, think again.

The entrance of the Bibliotheca

Popyrus Magazine had an exclusive interview with Dr. Azza Ezzat, Head of the Research and Publication Section Writings and Scripts Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s , revealed a game-changing platform that’s been quietly evolving since 2010.

It's called “Hieroglyphs Step by Step” , and its mission is simply :

Make learning hieroglyphs easy, accessible, and entirely in Arabic.

“Back then, all existing websites teaching hieroglyphs were in English,” Dr.Azza told us. “So we decided to create something for Arabic speakers to make the material more accessible for those who don’t speak English but are eager to learn.”

“By 2015, the platform was launched for the first time as an initial phase a foundational step toward what would become one of the most user friendly hieroglyphic learning tools available.”

Learning Without Limits Or Teachers

Here’s the real beauty of this project: You don’t need a classroom. You don’t need a professor. This is self-guided learning you move at your own pace, without judgment or pressure.Just as the name suggests, “Step by Step,” you begin with the *24 basic signs*, the building blocks of the language just like learning your ABCs.From there, you’ll move on to “words “, then “sentences”, then “grammar “and eventually, to actual “hieroglyphic writing”: how to form it, how to read it, how to understand it.

But it doesn’t stop there.

You’ll learn how the direction of the signs matters, how  numbers work in hieroglyphs, and finally explore temples, royal names, and cartouches. It’s deep, it’s fascinating and it’s totally doable.

Not Just for Students Made for Everyone

“Sure, the platform is simplified enough for students. But the target audience isn’t just students.” Dr.Azza clarified . Whether you’re a "curious learne", a "history enthusiast", or even a "tour guide" this platform was designed to speak to you.You don’t need to be a specialist to explore Egypt’s written past.

It’s Not Just Watching

This isn’t just a page of text you scroll through. It’s interactive .“There are "quizzes" at every level. You actually earn "marks", and based on your score, you "unlock the next level".”Each section includes "exercises", and one of the creative parts is something called "Let’s Read Pictures." This feature lets you gradually work through hieroglyphic signs embedded in real images "from easy to hard"building your confidence every step of the way. It’s more than reading. It’s understanding. Interacting. Progressing.

 6,000 Words and Counting

And here's another reason this platform stands out: “It includes a  dictionary of around 6,000 hieroglyphic words and it’s not static. It’s  updated every month. The content is constantly growing and evolving, just like your understanding will.” Dr. Azza explained

Built by Scholars, Backed by Science

This isn’t a casual hobby site. The content was developed by a team of Egyptology researchers , relying on reliable references many of which date back to the early 1900s.That’s why it’s  scientifically solid , yet still incredibly "friendly" and "inviting".
